Ruth (Watson) Calame Ruth Watson Calame, 90, of Corsicana passed away Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, in Corsicana. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Corley Funeral Home. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Corley Funeral Chapel with Dr. David Hale officiating. Interment will follow at Wortham Cemetery. Mrs. Calame was born May 5, 1913, at Steward's Mill, the second daughter of William Terry and Mary Ada McAdams Watson, members of a pioneer family of Freestone County. She attended Steward's Mill school and graduated from Wortham High School in 1929. She attended NTSTC and the University of Texas. She was married to Alvis Calame in 1935 and resided in Dallas for 40 years. She worked as a secretary until her retirement from J.P. Stevens Company in 1974. She was a member of Scofield Memorial Church and the Scoberrean Study Club. She and Alvis moved to Corsicana in 1977 and attended Northside Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Terry and Ada Watson; and sister, Leola Watson. Survivors include her husband, Alvis Calame of Corsicana; and numerous cousins. Memorials may be made to Northside Baptist Church. Students receive Calame scholarships Corsicana Daily Sun newspaper - Saturday, June 17, 2006 From Staff Reports Alvis and Ruth Calame seemed to be ordinary, hard-working people, but their generosity was anything but ordinary. Born in 1911 in Wortham, Alvis Calame graduated from Wortham High School and attended Westminster College in Tehuacana. In 1935, he married Ruth Watson from the Stewards Mill area. After she graduated from Wortham High School, Ruth attended North Texas Normal School, now University of North Texas. After Alvis completed three years of military service in World War II as a member of the United States Army’s 14th Armored Division, he and Ruth settled in Dallas. When the Calames retired, they relocated in Corsicana in 1977, but maintained close ties to the community of Wortham and to Freestone County. Ruth died in December 2003, and Alvis passed away nine months later. During the time that the Calames resided in Corsicana in their retirement years, they developed a strong friendship with the late David Hale, who was serving on the Navarro College Foundation Board. With his encouragement, the Calames established an endowment of $200,000 for scholarships to be awarded to graduates of the Freestone County high schools of Teague, Fairfield and Wortham. The scholarship pays tuition, fees, and textbooks for four semesters at Navarro College. Five Calame scholarships have been awarded for the coming academic year, 2006-2007. Recipients include Brandon Griffin of Fairfield, Crystal Hill of Teague, and Joseph Mullenax, DUndrea Smith and Zanell Gross, all of Wortham. The Navarro College Foundation acknowledges the generosity of Alvis and Ruth Calame. This scholarship will provide countless numbers of students the opportunity to pursue their academic goals.
