Fort Bend Herald, January 20, 2015: Edwin Lee Stasney passed away on January 17, 2015 at Oak Bend Hospital surrounded by his family at the age of 92. He was born May 28, 1922 in Praha, Texas. It was there that Edwin met Sophie Rose Olsovsky. They married and were blessed with each other's companionship for a remarkable sixty-seven years. Mr. Stasney served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S Army Air Forces during WWII as a crew chief on the B-24 Liberators 780th Bombardment Squadron. He was proud that none of the planes that he was a mechanic on ever went down during fighting. Edwin participated in the Pantanella, Italy and North Africa campaigns. After the war, Edwin chose the occupation of farming, and he farmed in Beasley, Texas for many years with the support of his family. He was a third generation cotton farmer that went from dragging a pick sack to running a four-row picker. He was a member of The American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He and Sophie were members of St. Michael's Catholic Church. Edwin is survived by his loving wife Sophie, and his ten children: Pat Hughes and husband Donny, Frankie Stasney and wife Nancy, Kenneth Stasney and wife Janet, Bobby Stasney and wife Jeanette, Ronnie Stasney and wife Nancy, George Stasney and wife Debra, Shirley Sykora and husband Larry, Kathy Howard and husband John David, Lynette Kovarcik and husand John and Douglas Stasney. He is also survived by his brother Joe "George" Stasney, and his brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, John & Polly Olsovsky, Ben & Shirley Olsovsky, Georgia Matusek, Elaine Olsovsky and Rosie Olsovsky. He is known as "Popo" to 21 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and one on the way. He also has a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Edwin is preceded in death by his parents, E.J. and Phillipine Stasney, his brother-in-laws, Frank Olsovsky, Charlie Olsovsky and Joe Matusek, his sister-in-laws, Agnes Olsovsky and Anastasia Stasney. Edwin enjoyed spending time at the coffee shop in the morning and tending to his fruit and pecan trees and chickens. His most beloved hobby was fishing. He delighted in talking about his WWII experience, fishing stories, and debating politics. He enjoyed playing dominoes with his family, especially his cousins, the Rohan's and the Holub's. His greatest pride was his wife and their family. He left a legacy of hard-work, the meaning and importance of family, pride in serving one's country, and the significance of the Czech heritage. Visitation will be Thursday January 22, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., with a Rosary service beginning at 7:00 p.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Needville, Tx.
