When Edward A. Janak was 24, he married 21-year old Helen L. Masek in January, 1946, in Omaha, Nebraska. Then he went to World War II, serving in the Navy on several ships, including the Bottineau APA-235. 1963 found him leading a polka band (Eddie Janak Polka Band), playing in Lincoln, Nebraska. He and Helen really loved to polka. They were blessed with 5 children: Betty, Susan, Sharon, Edward and Donald. Eddie left this world on Nov. 25, 1973. Telegram, November 27, 1973 JANAK - Last rites for Edward (Eddie) Janak, 52, well-known Omaha polka band leader who was a native of Brainard, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday from Dworak Funeral Home in Omaha and at 10:30 a.m. at Assumption Church in that city. Mr. Janak, who died Sunday night of an apparent heart attack, played saxophone and clarinet in bands since 1936 and led the Eddie Janak orchestra the past 17 years. He is survived by his wife, Helen; father, Pete Janak; sons, Edward Jr. and Donald; daughters, Sharon and Susan, all of Omaha; and another daughter, Betty Colvard of Murray.
