Bio

Cyrill J. (Sid) Pokladnik, age 86, of Dallas died September 22, 1999 in a Dallas nursing home. Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. September 26 at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Dallas. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. September 27, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, with the Rev. Msgr. Thomas W. Weinzapfel presiding. Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Dallas. Born October 21, 1912 in the Czech Republic, he was preceded in death by his parents, Cyrill and Anna Pokladnik; brother, Otto, Milton, Frank, Richard; and son, John Cyrill Pokladnik. Sid has long been a fraternal and civic leader, active in many organizations. His greatest dedication has been within the SPJST. Beginning in the late 1920’s, the founding fathers of SPJST Lodge 84 inspired Sid to become active on committees, and began to take officer positions within the local lodge. After spending many years visiting other memberships, attending district meetings around the state, and becoming increasingly innovative at helping build active participation in insurance sales, he began to devote most of his “free time” to the SPJST. During the 1950’s and 60’s, Cyrill Pokladnik served as president of Lodge 84, district president, District Three Rest Home director, delegate to the conventions, and ultimately District Three Director. He held this title, as well as Chairman of the Board for the SPJST. Many times he has represented the SPJST at the Texas and National Fraternal Congress Conventions. Sid (because of his old world European sausage tradition, with its Czech roots) participated in a sister-city trip to Brno in the Czech Republic, by providing, transporting, and serving a barbecue dinner to the city for its 750th birthday celebration, introducing the “Texas” way of eating. The family has continued in all the efforts of Cyrill and his wife Justine, who set quite a standard. As owner of Rudolph’s Market and Sausage Factory in Dallas, Cyrill was the instrumental force in bringing wholesale sales in the late 1940’s resulting in Rudolph’s products being served in approximately one-third of the barbecue restaurants in the Dallas and Fort Worth areas. This led to a large expansion of the plant facilities in the sixties, which also included enlarging the retail section. Rudolph’s has been named the “Best meat market in Dallas” by the Dallas Times Herald, The Dallas Morning News and D Magazine. Cyrill is survived by his wife Justine, daughter, Justine Marie Yeager and husband, Doug; grandchildren, Richard Anderson and wife, Jennifer, Tara Cloutman and husband Chad, Brandon Andreason and wife, Natalie, Keri Andreason and Neal Andreason; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Alexandria and Emily Andreason, and Cayla, Lauren and Brady Cloutman; brothers, Robert Pokladnik and wife Betty, and Joe Pokladnik and wife Floy, all of Dallas; sister, Julie Vollmar of Montgomery, MN. Cyrill Pokladnik’s dream since his birth in a small village outside of Brno in 1912 was to be the best he could be, and to give his life in service to others. He managed to sustain this dream in every commitment. He enjoyed 65 years of marriage to Justine Svoboda, 48 years of parenting, 30 years of grandparenting, and 70 years of business. Along with his family and career, the biggest recipient of his time has been the SPJST. His passion to see this great fraternal organization to be the best it can be, has never wavered him and he has always been proud to have been a major part of its success. Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews, Richard, Brandon and Neal Andreason, and Paul, Richard, Milton and David Pokladnik, and Chad Cloutman. Sparkman/Crane Funeral Home in Dallas was in charge of funeral arrangements. The West News, West, Texas, Volume 109, No. 39, Ed. 1, Thursday, September 30, 1999, page 6.
