LAWRENCE EDWARD BURNELL, age 85, formerly of Edison, passed away Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at the Galion Pointe Nursing Facility in Galion. He was born August 12, 1929, in Mount Gilead to the late Paul Virgil and Mary Elizabeth Lillian (Clegg) Burnell. Lawrence graduated from Mount Gilead High School in the Class of 1948. He played on both the football and basketballs teams through his high school years. On August 1, 1948, he married his high school sweetheart, Marian Jean Mellott. In 1962, Lawrence played a big role in developing the Edison Baseball Park. He was a Little League coach for many years and even came out of retirement to help coach his grandson’s team. In 1987 the park was dedicated to him, making him very proud. Over the years he was very active in the Mount Gilead Athletic Boosters and retired at the age of 69 from the chain gang for Mount Gilead home football games. He was also an avid bowler for many years. Lawrence owned and operated Burnell’s Meat Distributing, Jo’s Pizza in Mount Gilead and after moving to Piney Flats, Tennessee for a short period of time owned and operated Larry’s Pizza. When he returned to Ohio in the 80’s, he started Burnell Appliance Repair Service and L&M Auto Sales. He was a member of Denmark United Methodist Church and was a Gideon. Lawrence will be dearly missed by his wife, Marian, of Galion; three children: Dennis (Sue) Burnell of New Breman, Ohio, Patricia (Steve) Stansbery of Edison, LuAnn (Steve) Bloomfield of Mount Gilead; nine grandchildren: Shanna (Tony) Bales of Brunswick, Dr. Shawn (Alicia) Stansbery of Bowling Green, Brian (Kelly) Pangborn of Mount Gilead, Stephanie (Steve) Barr of Caledonia, Trent (Becky) Bloomfield of Findlay, Emily Burnell of New Breman, Molly Burnell of Ada. Nathan Burnell of North Carolina, Amy (Tom) Wilker of New Breman; 14 great-grandchildren: Drew and Ben Bales, Hayden and Owen Pangborn, Parker, Gabriella and Ethan Barr, Nicolas and Jacob Bloomfield, Allison, Grace, Lillian, Alexa and Olivia Wilker; a sister, Dorothy Wrhel of Mount Gilead; a nephew, Ed (Debbie) Burns of Warsaw, Indiana; and a niece, Cindy (Ken) Mercer of Harrisville, Rhode Island. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Larry Burnell in 1990. The Burnell family will greet friends from 2 – 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, 2015, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main Street, Mount Gilead. Services celebrating his life will immediately follow at 4:00 p.m. with Pastor David Smith and his son-in-law, Pastor Steve Bloomfield officiating. A private family burial will take place at a later date in Bryn Zion Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Denmark United Methodist Church or to Gideons International, and may be made in care of the funeral home.
