Bio
Martin Joseph Stewart, Jr., son of Martin and Mary (Brinkman) Stewart, Sr. was born September 15, 1926 on the family farm near Graettinger, IA. He attended country school near Graettinger, and he was a graduate of Graettinger High School. Martin married Phyllis Ann Roberts in 1950 at Jackson, MN, and to this union, three children were born. Phyllis preceded Martin in death in 1991. In 2010, Martin married Cathy Harold near Graettinger, IA. Martin farmed, and he had his own bulldozer. He used it to make many improvements to the farm he lived on, and he built two ponds and filled in a lot of gullies so he could farm more of his land. In addition to farming, Martin worked in excavation as a finish operator where he would sometimes travel for the work once the crop was in and return when it was ready to come out. Martin enjoyed gardening, flying remote control airplanes and taking motorcycle rides. Some of his favorite pastimes were working in his orchard and tinkering with electronics. He was an avid outdoorsman and conservationist. He loved nature and spending time with friends, but most of all, he loved his family. On Sunday, December 14, 2014, Martin passed away at the Emmetsburg Care Center. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Cathy of Graettinger; his children: Michael "Mick" Stewart (Livia) of Graettinger, Pamela Beardsley of Las Vegas, NV and Mark Stewart (Debbie) of Orting, WA; step-children: Lauralee Lemcke and Tom Lemcke both of Graettinger; three grandchildren; Brian Beardsley, Emerson Zapotosky, III and Ben Stewart; one great-granddaughter, Alexis Mae Zapotosky; and one step-granddaughter, Paige Lemcke. Martin was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Phyllis; two brothers: Charlie and Leo Stewart; and three sisters: Frances Lundgren, Mary Crotts, and Anna Danger. Contributor: C.A.
