Ray Kovar was a Deputy Sheriff for the Dallas County Sheriff's Department in Texas, out of Dallas. He worked 8 years for the Police Force. He was killed in the line of duty at age 34. Deputy Kovar and his partner were responding to a call for assistance on a prowler call at a local business. Upon their arrival the Officers split up and Deputy Kovar headed towards the back of the building. As he approached a Central Air-Conditioning Unit, he observed a subject crouching down behind it. He ordered the suspect out from behind there and to stand up. The suspect came out, drew a weapon and shot Deputy Kovar in the chest with a .38 caliber handgun. Deputy Kovar was able to return fire and wound the suspect in the hand. The suspect fled the scene, but was later arrested. The man, Johnny Plyles-24, was convicted of murder and executed on June 15th, 1998, 16 years after the murder. Deputy Kovar was survived by his wife, Kay Lynn Kovak of Ennis, Texas, a brother Robert Kovak of Ennis, Texas, three sisters-Mary Zabojnik of Ennis, Texas, Virginiab Svehlak of Ennis, Texas, and Ann Cox of Seagoville, Texas.
