As indicated in the 1900 census, Bridget gave birth to 12 children, 10 of which are well documented and of which 8 were living at that time. Two children appear to have died very young. Thomas Melia is listed in the 1850 Federal Census in Aux Sable, Grundy Illinois as 1 year old and does not appear in any known records before or after that. He appears to have been born in 1849 and died by 1855. Anthony Melia appears with the family in the Illinois State Census with the family in June 1855 as being under 10 years old. He does not appear in any known records before or after that date. He appears to have been born between the 1850 Federal census and 1855 State Census, and to have died prior to the 1860 Federal census. Based on timing, both sons would have likely been born in Grundy County, Illinois. Obituary from the Papillion Times: Mrs. Bridget Melia, most. highly respected during a residence in 8arpy county since pioneer days, died last Sunday evening at 6 o'clock, at her home in Forest City precinct. She had been suffering from a stomach trouble since last April. Mrs. Melia was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Thomas. She was born in County of Mayo, Ireland, eighty-two years ago, being about the same age as Queen Victoria of England; She was married to Michael Melia In Ireland, and in 1852; moved, with her husband to America, locating at Morristown, Ill. They resided, in Illinois for six years, and then immigrated to Sarpy County and. located a farm in Forest City precinct. Mrs. Melia was regarded a woman of very high intelligence. In the early days before the county was blessed with the services of a trained physician, she was the one to whom the afflicted turned for relief, and never in vain even though the duties of a pioneer housewife were such it would seem nowadays impossible to bear the added burdens of another. It was an imperative mission for someone to perform and she is the one who assumed the task, trained herself, and gave the energy of her life freely and unstintedly. She was charitable beyond degree, loveable, possessing a kindly disposition and has builded a monument of love from the hearts of everyone who has been blessed by her acquaintance and kindly ministrations which shall endure until this generation shall cease to be. Her husband died thirty years ago. Of a family of ten children the following are left to cherish her memory: Mrs. Mary McMahon, Hannah Mercer, Patrick. J, John, James B., and Martin H. Melia, of this county, Mrs. Elizabeth Armstrong, of Omaha, and Michael J. Melia, of South Omaha. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Langdon and Catherine Langdon, and one brother, John Thomas, of Gretna. Funeral services were held last Tuesday forenoon at 11 o'clock from the residence and St. Patrick's church in Gretna, high mass being read by Rev. Father Wallace.
