Bio
Mathias Hilterbrand was born in Bedford, Pennsylvania, February 8, 1840, and passed away at his home in Osceola, Iowa, March 26, 1919, aged 76 years, 1 month and 18 days. He was united in marriage to Nancy Jane Smith in 1864. To this union eleven children were born, one passing away in infancy and two boys passed away when they were about 18 years of age. Mr. Hilterbrand has been sick for about six weeks, during which time he has suffered the grievous loss of his devoted wife and grandson. The family came to Clarke county in 1882 where they have become well-known. He leaves to mourn eight children as follows: Mrs. Barbara King of Osceola, Iowa; Mrs. Mary Clevenger of Truro, Iowa; John W. of South Dakota; Oliver of Osceola, Iowa; Fred of Eddyville, Nebraska; Melvin of Nebraska; Myrtle Osgood and Mrs. May Schick of Osceola, Iowa. One sister, Mrs. Barbara Eshelman of Mt. Pleasant; thirty-one grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
