Born John Hejl, his name was changed when he entered the Military. U. S. Marine Corps World War I Purple Heart French Croix de Guerre Brooklyn Eagle Wednesday January 4, 1939 JOHN J. HALE, 46, WAR HERO, BURIED John J. Hale, 46, World War hero and employee of the financial and accounting department of the New York Journal and American, who died Friday, was buried yesterday in Cypress Hills Cemetery with full military honors. Mr. Hale, who died in the Naval Hospital here, is survived by his widow Ruth; a daughter Dorothy; a son John Jr., and a brother. The family lives at 112 E. Lincoln Ave., Valley Stream. Mr. Hale was a member of Phoebe Apperson Hearst Post, 1197, American Legion, which was represented at the funeral. A firing squad from the Navy Yard fired three volleys in tribute to the former Marine, who received a citation, the French Croix de Guerre and the Purple Heart for his war service. Fraternal services were held Monday night in the George C. Herbst & Son Chapel, 6741 5th Ave., by members of his post, assisted by members of Bay Ridge Post 157, & Greenwood Lodge 569, F. & A. M.
