Rudia Haliburton, Jr, 86, of McAlester, died Sunday, May 22, 2016 at McAlester Regional Health Care Center. Rudia was born to Rudia and Oral (Cable) Halliburton at Jack Fork on December 31, 1929. He graduated from McAlester High School. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree from Phillips University at Enid and a Master’s degree in History from Oklahoma State University. He married Helen LaVonne McCollum on February 14, 1949 in Enid. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Rudia worked as a history professor for Oklahoma State University, University of Oklahoma, Cameron University, and lastly retired from Northeastern Oklahoma State University in 1991. He authored several books and myriad of published historical papers. He was responsible for the first Black History program in the State of Oklahoma. In 1970 he was awarded “Oklahoma’s Teacher of the Year,” the last university professor to receive this honor. He was an ordained Christian Disciples of Christ minister, and after retiring pastored the Hartshorne First Christian Church for fourteen years. He was an active member of the Silver Hair Legislature and was a member of the Savanna Senior Citizens. He was preceded in death by his parents: Rudia and Oral Halliburton. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 26 at First Christian Church in Hartshorne officiated by Rev. Richard Dixon. Interment will be at Blanco Cemetery with military honors provided by the U.S. Army Honor Guard. Service arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service.
