Bio

The Winona Daily News, Sunday, June 28, 1964; Page: 3 One-Term Mayor Was Advocate of Air Service Winona City Hall offices will remain closed Monday until 1 p.m. for the funeral of William A. Galewski, 67, who served as mayor from 1943 to 1945. Though he served but briefly as mayor, the list of his public service accomplishments for the city is long and varied. HE NEVER had a pilot's license or flew a plane but he was one of the city's most consistent advocates of better facilities for commercial and private aviation. In 1944 he and the late Roy T. Patneaude organized a drive to raise $70,000 or purchase of the present site of Max Conrad Field. Mr. Galewski and Mr. Patneaude served as co-chairmen of the Chamber of Commerce airport committee until the latter's death in 1955. He then was named assistant airport manager for the city at an annual salary of $1, the checks for which he framed but never cashed. He had served continuously as chairman of the airport zoning board since its organization in 1948. He was named by the City Council as one member of a three-man team of representatives at Civil Aeronautics Board hearings in Washington, D.C., held last Wednesday. The proceedings were in connection with a move by the CAB to eliminate Winona as a commercial air service terminal, a move which Mr. Galewski actively opposed through a multistate organizational effort and appeals to Minnesota congressional leaders to intercede. HE WAS a member of the Civil Air Patrol squadron here since its reorganization a half-dozen years ago. A frequent visitor at City Council meetings, Mr. Galewski made it a custom to be present for each "inaugural night," the third Monday in April when new officers are installed for the upcoming fiscal year. In 1930, he was appointed to the Board of Education as 4th Ward director, succeeding his father. Completing his father's term, he also served two elective terms for a total of 11 years on the board. In this capacity he also served as chairman of the board's building and grounds committee. Mr. Galewski and a friend, the late Robert Verchota, were leaders a decade ago in a successful effort to prevent winter draw down of Upper Mississippi River pools by the Army Corps of Engineers. He was one of nine Winona businessmen who organized a nonprofit corporation after World War II to build 21 new homes on West 5th Street and West Broadway. AS AN ACTIVE member of the Winona County Democratic-Farmer-Labor party, he was a delegate to many county, district and state conventions. He was a member of the executive committee for many years and held various offices in the DFL organization. Mr. Galewski was a veteran of Navy service in World War I and was a charter and lifetime member of Leon J. Wetzel American Legion Post here. He served in the Minnesota State Guard in World War II. In business here for many years, he was president and treasurer of the Winona Heating & Ventilating Co. A brother-in-law, Donald Gostomski, is vice president. He started with the company in 1912 as a sheet metal apprentice and became its president in 1925. A longtime member and past president of the Winona Civic Association, Mr. Galewski was honored at a testimonial dinner by the organization May 14, 1945. MR. GALEWSKI was born March 27, 1897, to Mr. and Mrs. William M. Galewski, Winona, and was a lifelong resident of the city. He married the former Victoria Gostomski Oct. 17,1923, at Si. Stanislaus Church, The couple lived at 653 E. Broadway. He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, St. Joseph's Society, past president of the Winona Athletic Club and its benefit association, the Improved Order of Red Men, American Legion, Veterans of World War I, Winona Civic Association, Winona Rod and Gun Club, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Civil Air Patrol and the Winona Activity Group.
