SSEWARD — Joseph Henry Schaf, 90, passed away Oct. 10, 2014, in Seward. Mr. Schaf was born May 7, 1924, in David City, the oldest son of Joseph F. and Mary F. (Heeg) Schaf. He proudly served two tours of duty in the United States Army, first in the Philippines and then in Korea. He married the love of his life, Althea Blunn, on July 14, 1956, at St Patrick's Catholic Church in Sidney. He retired from a successful career with the USDA in 1987 and, along with his wife, moved to a farm in St. Libory, where he enjoyed raising cattle, golfing, playing cards and visits from his grandchildren. Mr. Schaf was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Althea (Blunn) Schaf, in 2009, and earlier this year by Sister Francis Schaf, his youngest sister. Survivors include his four daughters and their families, Althea and Larry, Bibiana and Bruce, Christine and David, Elizabeth and Tom; a sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Harry; a brother, Leo; and 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a fourth expected next year.
