Betty Jean Smith July 11,1930-October 20,2014 Betty Jean Smith, 84, of Scottsbluff died October 20, 2014 at the Residency Care Center in Scottsbluff. Her funeral service will be held October 23, 2014 at WestWay Christian Church in Scottsbluff. Cremation will follow the service at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel and Crematory with inurnment to be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery north of Morrill. Betty was born July 11, 1930 at Mitchell the daughter of Charles and Maddie(Babcock) Howe. She received her education at various schools in The Valley. She was united in marriage to Wayne M. Hawkinson in August of 1946 at Harrisburg. The couple farmed in the Morrill area until 1965. Betty moved to Scottsbluff in 1967 and she began her career at St. Mary’s Hospital. She married Clarence “Smitty” Smith in August of 1970 at Scottsbluff. The couple made their home in rural Scotts Bluff County near Melbeta. Betty and Clarence owned and operated the racetrack east of Gering for several years as well as a trucking company. Following Smitty’s death, Betty moved to Scottsbluff, most recently living at The Residency Care Center since July of 2014.Betty was a member of WestWay Christian Church. She enjoyed quilting and had made her grandchildren and other family quilts over the years.Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband Clarence Smith, infant daughter Valerie, daughter Vicki Irving, grandson Kent Irving, brothers Bob, Clair, Stan, and Donald Howe, and sister Myrtle Stone.
