Bio

Robert Edward Thornton, 75, a native of Hamilton, Texas and long time resident of Grand Prairie, died on Thursday, October 9, 2014. Robert was the youngest of 6 children born to the late William Henry Thornton and the late Lena Smith Thornton. After graduation from Hamilton High School, he would marry his childhood sweetheart, Jo Cozby. They would move to Grand Prairie where they would raise their 3 children. Robert would start a career with IBM, eventually retiring after more than 30 years of service. Even after his retirement, he would remain active, working for The Dallas County Appraisal District and Chesapeake Energy. Robert had a long life of giving back to others. His community service included serving on the School Board, City Council and Hospital Board. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Grand Prairie for more than fifty-four years, serving on the Deacon Board of Trustees. He loved his family deeply. He cherished the times that he could spend with them, especially grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid sportsman, and enjoyed occasional trips with his wife, Jo. Survivors: wife of fifty-four years; Jo Cozby Thornton; children, Scott Thornton and his wife Sharon, Tammy Thornton Buffington and her husband Charles, Shane Thornton and his wife Cindy; grandchildren; Tanna, Audra, Austin, Laurel, Rollin, Aubrey, Cody; great-grandchildren, Brilee, Cerly, Audree Ann, Zeke and Avery. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings; Arvil, James, Pearlene, Maxine and Betty Sue.
