Bio

Myrtle Jeanette (Winjum-Matejka) Grahn Gurnick Former County Superintendent of Clay County Schools passes. Myrtle J. Grahn-Gurnick passed away peacefully on September 23, 2014, at the age of 101, in her home in Las Vegas, NV surrounded by her loving family. Myrtle was born on July 19, 1913 in Hitterdal, MN, to Jens Jr. and Jennie Winjum. She grew up there with her two sisters and three brothers, graduating from Hitterdal High School in 1931. She then attended Valley City, ND, College where she earned her teaching credential. Myrtle married Edward Matejka in June of 1940; they had two children, Karen and Larry. Ed died in January of 1950. Myrtle taught in country schools and ran for the elected office of County Superintendent of Clay County Schools. She won the election in 1954. Myrtle married Knute Grahn in August of 1956 and they moved to California where she taught as a substitute teacher. She retired to Hemet, CA, where she resided for many years. Myrtle married George Gurnick in September of 1991 and they moved to Las Vegas, NV. George passed away in September of 2006. Left to cherish her memory are her two children, two grandchildren; a daughter-in-law; several loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Edward Matejka, Knute Grahn, and George Gurnick; and her siblings Clara, Ella, Norman, George and Arnt. Funeral: Saturday, October 4, 2014, at 10:00 A.M. in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN. Visitation one hour before the funeral. Interment: Salem West Cemetery, Hitterdal, MN.
