Laura June Gower Jackson passed away peacefully on September 23, 2014 after a brief illness. She was the daughter of Hugh Luther and Martha Grammer Gower, born in San Antonio, Texas on June 2, 1922. 'June' Gower, as she was then known, grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas, graduating from Evans Elementary, Wynn Seale Junior High and Corpus Christi (Miller) High Schools. On December 7, 1941 she married Herschel 'Barney' Thorpe, a cadet at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi. During the next several years, she and their young son followed him during the remainder of his military career. He died tragically on active duty. Her second husband, Austin, Texas attorney Herbert Smartt also predeceased her. Laura was further educated in Texas and Wisconsin Schools in Music and Art. Her travels in Europe and Central America offered material for painting and writing stories, the desire of her heart. Her books, while primarily fiction, mirror some of her own experiences. In later years, she was active in Corpus Christi Art Guild and Corpus Christi Art Center. In 1991, she married John Edmond 'Ed' Jackson, CPA and they enjoyed retirement years together. She and Ed were active members of First Baptist Church Corpus Christi, where they participated extensively in its mission and activities. Laura was predeceased by her parents; her brothers, Gordon and Ralph Gower; and her sisters, Hurine (Willard) Cobb and Joan (Merrill) Allen. She is survived by her son, Dr. Herschel B. (born Thorpe) Smartt and his wife Heather; five grandchildren, Dr. Jessica Smartt (Greg) Gullion, Erik Smartt, Jonathan (Alexandria) Smartt, Marie Smartt and Thomas Smartt; and three great-grandchildren, Renn and Rory Gullion and Max Smartt. She is also survived by her husband, Ed Jackson and his three sons Eddie (Paulette), David (Linda) and Jeff (Donna) Jackson.
