Evelyn Shirley “Evie” Jonak, 71, of Grand Island entered Heaven’s gate Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014. Services will be Saturday in Blackhammer, Minn. Pastor Leonard Liptack of Faith Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Blackhammer Cemetery. All Faiths Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Evie was born March 24, 1943, in Rushford, Minn., to Martin and Gilma (Treangen) Dragvold. Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Robert Jonak of Grand Island; a grandson, Taylor Jonak of Omaha, and his fiance, Rachael Parker; sisters, Marlene Morken of Spring Grove, Minn., Charlotte (Bill) LaBonne of Canton, Minn., and Linda Gorder of Peterson, Minn.; several nieces and nephews; and her grand-doggy, Dozer. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Gerald Dragvold; and a sister, Helen Valedez. Evie was united in marriage to the father of her son, Larry Jonak, in Rockford, Ill. She lived in LaCrosse, Wis., and Spring Grove, Minn., moving to Grand Island in 1968. While in Minnesota, Evie was employed by Rush Products. While in Grand Island, she worked for GIA, Pacific Tool, Delicious Foods and the Sleep Inn. Evie’s nurturing spirit was always present. She raised her two nieces with the help of her sisters and brother. Their Norwegian heritage was evident when Evelyn’s siblings got together and they spoke their “old-world” language. Always putting others ahead of herself, Evie loved spending time with her family, especially her grandson. Her hobbies included ceramics, watching “Wheel of Fortune,” playing cards and cooking. Evie’s specialty was chicken noodle soup, “For the Soul,” and there was a life lesson with every mouthful.
