Bio

Albert enlisted in the United States Army on July 28,1941, prior to the beginning of our involvement in World War II. He was stationed in the Philippine Islands, assigned to the 27th Material Squadron, 20th Air Base Group, Far East Air Force. At this time, the air force was part of the army. Albert was a private first class. In late December 1941, most of the Far East Air Force was withdrawn from Mindanao to Darwin, Australia. Few of the non-flying personnel were evacuated. Nearly all ground and flying personnel who remained were employed as infantry on Bataan. On April 9, 1942, Bataan surrendered to the Japanese. 95% of enlisted men became prisoners of war and 61% of those died before they could be repatriated. In all probability, Albert Zona was part of this group. Albert died as a prisoner of war. Both U.S. and Japanese files list Albert as being a prisoner at the infamous Cabanatuan Camp, Nueva Province, Luzon, Philippines. It is unknown if his body was ever recovered. Albert has two memorials. One at the Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, Nebraska and at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines. In Manila, he is listed on the "Tablets of the Missing." Military Information: Pfc, US ARMY AIR FORCES
