Bio

Eugene Pattie age 95, of Carrollton, Missouri, passed away Friday, September 19, 2014 at Carroll House in Carrollton. Eugene was born July 23, 1919, the son of Carl Eugene and Bertie Pattie, in Carrollton, Missouri. He graduated from DeWitt High School in 1938. After graduation, he joined the Civilian Association Corps for two years; after his honorable discharge, he joined the United States Navy in 1940. He was a Veteran of World War II. During that time and before, he served on several ships, but fought his biggest battle on a Jeep Carrier (The Laguna Point) in the Pacific. He earned eight battle stars in the Conflict and many other honors. After the war was over, he was asked by a group of Naval Officers to take a trip around the World, which he was so proud of and truly enjoyed. During the conflict, he witnessed the Atomic Bomb Incident, and the signing of the Peace Treaty aboard ship. He also was responsible for bringing the Prisoners of War back to the States. He met his future wife Evelyn (Janet) Stasny in 1942 and they were married in 1943 at the USO Chapel in Corpus Christi, Texas. They enjoyed 71 years of marriage April 4, 2014. They loved to dance and enjoyed traveling to Naval Reunions and to visit family in their motor home. Eugene was a sixty-plus year member of Wakanda Lodge #52 AF&AM in Carrollton, serving as Worshipful Master in 1975. He was a fifty-plus year member of Eastern Star and a sixty-plus year member of Fleet Reserve. Eugene was also a fifty-plus year member of The Rucker-McAlister American Legion Post #7 in Brunswick, Missouri, where he served as Chaplain for many years. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Carrollton, where he served as Deacon, Usher and Property Chairman. He was a past member of the Carrollton Country Club. Eugene is survived by his wife Evelyn (Janet) of the home; one son, Gene Pattie, Jr.; one granddaughter, Shana Fitzpatrick and husband Josh; two great-granddaughters, Eva and Emma Fitzpatrick; two nieces, LaVeda Wright, and Bertie Sewell and husband Richard; two nephews, Wilford Ray VanDeventer and wife Virginia, and Lewis Richard VanDeventer; several great nieces; and several great nephews. Family that has preceded him in death are his parents; son, Johnny; three sisters, Lorene Chapman, Vera Polson, and Evelyn VanDeventer; one great-niece (Gayle); and one great-nephew, Terry. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2014, from 12:30 until 1:15 p.m., at Bittiker Funeral Home, 1201 North US 65 Highway, Carrollton, Missouri. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. at Bittiker Funeral Home, with Reverend Cheryl Sanders and Reverend Wayne Hammar officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, DeWitt, Missouri. The Rucker-McAlister American Legion Post #7 of Brunswick, Missouri will provide Military Services. Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church of Carrollton in memory of Eugene and they may be left at or mailed to Bittiker Funeral Home, P.O. Box 223, Carrollton, Missouri, 64633.
