Hedy Ann Slovak, age 91, passed away in Lancaster on September 12, 2014. She was born on December 31, 1922, in Alma, to Alois and Frances (Kuchar) Zmolik as Hattie Ann. When Hedy Lamarr became popular, she decided to change her name to Hedy. She didn't do it legally; she just started using her new name which is typical of the way Hedy always did things. She married Walter Slovak on August 8, 1943 in Ennis, Texas. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Lancaster, KJZT #111 and WFLA #401. She was proud of her Czech ancestry and of her Catholic religion. Hedy was a great cook and loved going to the Dallas Arboretum. She was strong, sweet, witty and funny. Hedy retired from the Lancaster Independent School District in 2007 after 28 years of service, at the age of 84 - only because she suffered a back injury. She is survived by her children and their spouses: Dianna Sword and her husband Doug, Carol Mahdak and her husband Michael, Mike Slovak and his wife Dawn, Debbie Champion and her husband Dale; as well as her grandchildren: Bob Kaska and his wife Sara, Dawne Payne and her husband Bryan, Matt Sword and his wife Jennifer, Taylor Slovak, Brianna Champion, Andrea Champion, and 5 great grandchildren. Hedy is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter Slovak; all of her brothers, Louis, Joe, Frank, Leslie, Charlie; and both of her sisters, Agnes Marusak and Mary Prachyl. Thanks to the staff at Millbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Elysian Hospice and Select Care for their loving care and support. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. with a Rosary at 6 P.M. on Sunday, September 14, 2014, at Boze-Mitchell-McKibbin Funeral Home in Ennis. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 A.M. on Monday, September 15, 2014, at Saint John Nepomucene Catholic Church with Father Tim Gollob as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Saint Joseph Cemetery in Ennis. Arrangements are under the direction of the Boze-Mitchell-McKibbin Funeral Home. Published in Dallas Morning News on Sept. 14, 2014
