George Louis Zapalac Jr, 67, passed away surrounded by the ones he laughed with, lived for, and loved on Sunday, August 17, 2014 in Austin, Texas George is survived by wife, Brenda Zapalac; two sons, Terry (Laura) Zapalac, Cody (Marcie) Wilhelm-Zapalac and daughter, Mariesa (Lance) Leiferman all of Smithville; sisters, Edna Mae (William) Psencik, Mary Jane (Daniel) Drab, and Joyce (Louis) Bordages and brother, Steve Zapalac (the late Sharon). George has six grandchildren; Dustin Leiferman (Pooter), Taryn Leiferman (Little One), Reid Zapalac (Reido), Kiley Leiferman (Willie), Ava Zapalac (Roosta) and Brooke Wilhelm-Zapalac (Little Tornado). To them he was known as “Grandpa”, the light of their world and the back bone of the family. Each grandchild had a special place in his heart and he loved attending their activities. George had numerous nieces and nephews to whom he was their beloved uncle they called “Junior” and was a friend to all. George was born to the late George and Mary Zapalac on January 18, 1947 in Smithville. George graduated from Smithville High School in 1966 and began working for the MKT Railroad after graduation. He married Brenda LaVerne Tiner on May 20, 1967 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Smithville and they began their lives together in Houston. George enjoyed story-telling and conversation among friends and through his generous and caring spirit left a lasting impression to all those he met. Preceding him in death were his parents and two sisters, Georgia Lee Ermis and Dorothy Ann Rollins. Visitation with Rosary at All Faiths of the Pines in Smithville. Funeral services will be held at St. Paul Catholic Church in Smithville followed by burial at Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to the American Heart Association. The family would like to express sincere thanks to the caring and devoted staff of the Seton Smithville Regional Hospital Emergency Room and St. David’s Hospital Intensive Care Unit.
