Bio

The Brainard Clipper , November 8, 1923, p. 1, col. 6 "Grandma" Sloup Mrs. Mary Sloup died at 9:30 Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Anna Kulhanek after only a few days illness. Mary Hrbacek was born in Bohemia on January 6, 1830, grew to womanhood there and was united in marriage to Andrew Sloup. They became parents of eight children, six boys and two girls, two of whom died in youth. Mr. Sloup died in 1844 [ sic ], and two years later Mrs. Sloup, two daughters and one son came to America, three of her sons having preceded them here. They settled on a farm near Prague where she lived until 1908 when her son-in-law died and she came to Brainard to live with her daughter, Mrs. Anna Kulhanek, with whom she has since made her home. After coming to America three more of Mrs. Sloup's children died, leaving only two sons and one daughter who survive her. The living children are: Martin Sloup of Schuyler, James Sloup of Prague and Mrs. Anna Kulhanek of Brainard. She is also survived by twenty-one grandchildren and fifty-four great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Msgr. Klein in Holy Trinity Catholic church on Tuesday morning, Nov. 5th, and burial was in the Catholic cemetery. Six of her grandsons were pallbearers: Joseph, Charles, Frank, James and Martin Sloup and Simon Kulhanek. ____ CARD OF THANKS We wish to extend our sincere thanks to all neighbors, friends and relatives who so kindly assisted us and extended sympathy at the time of death and burial of our beloved mother and grandmother, Mrs. Mary Sloup.
