Bio

Ruby Ellenore DeFord passed away in Grand Lake, Colorado on Saturday, September 25. She is survived by her daughter Ellenore Bonebrake, her son John DeFord, nine grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Ellenore was born on December 2, 1905 in Rushfield, Nebraska to William and Ruby Higgs. She graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Masters Degree in Music in 1935. She subsequently studied at the American Conservatory of Music during the 1960s, and also at the University of Oklahoma City. Ellenore married John F. DeFord on September 8, 1934 in Holly, Nebraska. She lived most of her life in the Midwest, particularly St. Paul, MN. Most recently she has lived with her son John in Salt Lake City, where she lead an active and healthy life up to her last days. Throughout her life she pursued her love of music through teaching, active participation in national music organizations, and judging music competitions. Ellenore was also president of the Northwest Suburban Chicago Branch of the Illinois State Music Teachers Association, where she instructed music students and their teachers. Ellenore had a great love of the outdoors. After her husband retired they spent their summers in the mountain community of Grand Lake, Colorado, where she enjoyed the abundant wildlife and an active lifestyle that included frequent hikes in the magnificent scenery of Rocky Mountain National Park. To the very end of her life, her continued daily walks around the neighborhood in all types of weather exemplified her attitude toward life, which was to live each day to the fullest regardless of the circumstances. A memorial service for Ellenore was held at the Stake Center on 27th East and 45th South on Thursday, Sept. 30. Interment in St. Paul, Minnesota.
