RAPID CITY — Marvin D. Beach, 86, lifetime resident of South Dakota, passed away Thursday, February 16, 2006 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. He was born January 12, 1920 to William Wade and Estelle Mae (Kaech) Beach at their cattle ranch in Folsom, South Dakota. They did not have benefit of modern machinery, yet survived the Depression and dust bowl conditions. Marvin, his brother Bob and sister Evie (Evelyn Beach Didier) attended country school until they moved to Rapid City. At a Hermosa church in about 1928, President Calvin Coolidge put his hand on Marvin's head and asked whose little boy he was! After graduating from Rapid City High School in 1937, Marvin was an engineering student at the School of Mines, and he surveyed some Black Hills roads. In WWII, Marvin worked for the War Department in Washington, D.C., as a cartographic engineer and made maps for General Doolittle's Bombing on Tokyo. Later, he became a B-17 bomber pilot over Germany and after the war, flew humanitarian missions. He was recalled for the Korean War, and became Commander of the Air Reserve Squadron in Rapid City, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. Marvin was married to Lucille Dwyer on Aug. 19, 1971 at Willmar, MN. He worked at Black Hills Power and Light, owned a grocery store at Canyon Lake, built Motel Beach on Mount Rushmore Road (a street name he lobbied for) and was manager of Black Hills Badlands and Lakes Association. He spent some years as a Chamber of Commerce Manager in Montana and Minnesota before retiring to Galena, South Dakota, and eventually moved back to Rapid. His favorite expression was, "T.G. for S.D. — Thank God for South Dakota!" Marvin was a member of the Masonic Lodge, A.F. & A.M., NAJA Shrine and Elks Lodge #1187 and played Bass Drum in the New Horizon Band. Survivors include his wife, son, daughter,a sister,3 stepchildren.Marvin was proud to be a grandfather to 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren and uncle to a number of nieces and nephews.
