: R. H. JOHNSON, JR. There are individuals so original, or purposeful, or successful that the historian thrills with joy in her task of writing their biographies. Mr. R. H. Johnson, Jr., Principal of the Tennessee Colony School, belongs most emphatically to this class. Although a young man with but eight years' teaching experience to his credit, many older, more prominent educators might thrill with pride could they claim R. H. Johnson's signal achievements of last summer. For R. H. Johnson's school in 1935, by one far-reaching feat, placed the Anderson County schools on a plane any county, in any state, might envy. The Tennessee Colony School is a consolidated country school, composed of but seven teachers and an enrollment of 228. No railroad disturbs the rural quiet of the town; there is no noise of commerce, no bustle of traffic. Rather, it is such a spot as the poet immortalizes thus: "Where smiling Spring its earliest visit paid And parting Summer's lingering blooms delayed!" And yet such a school, from such a community has set an example that any school, in any city, might well emulate and then boast of its achievement! In the summer of 1935, the agriculture class in the Tennessee Colony School, twenty-four boys in all, was taken on an educational tour which extended over approximately 3350 miles. The National Capitol and twelve different states were visited. Can one over-estimate the lasting good this tour was to these boys? Can one look into the future and say how far their individual lives will be broadened, brightened, bettered? And all because two teachers, R. H. Johnson, Jr. and the Teacher of Agriculture, H. O. Henderson, had the vision, the enterprise to make this thing possible! R. H. Johnson, Jr. was born in Montalba. His parents. Rufus H. Johnson, Sr., and Iva E. (Ward) Johnson, natives of Anderson County, reared a large family, seven daughters and three sons, all of whom, excepting one, live in Anderson County. One daughter is a resident of Houston County. R. H. Jr. was educated in Anderson County and the Sam Houston State College for Teachers. His B. S. degree was obtained from last named institution in 1929. For one year he taught at Chambers Creek, since then he has taught continuously at Tennessee Colony. Aside from his school activities, Mr. Johnson is a zealous church man, a member of the Christian Church and a Mason. In 1929, Mr. Johnson was united in marriage to Miss Sybil Graham of Athens, a teacher who has had nine years' experience in Anderson and Henderson Counties, having taught two years in the Tennessee Colony School. Mrs. Johnson is a Baptist. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson are the parents of one little daughter, Gloria La Del, who was born last May. This in brief is the account of this young couple. They are unpretentious, yet they have initiative and ambition. Who may dare affirm that they are not destined to go far in their chosen profession life and health being spared them?
