Bio

This burial is not listed in the cemetery index maintained by the Cheyenne City Clerk. Cheyenne Daily Leader no. 174 April 14, 1902, page 4 NO FOUL PLAY ---------- Jury Returned Verdict That Walter Groff Died Friday By His Own Hand. ---------- No Evidence of Foul Play Connected With His Death─Inquest Held Tuesday Over the Remains─Man Positively Identified─Funeral Occurred This Afternoon. ---------- Walter Groff was not murdered but died as the result of his own rash act was the verdict of the jury empaneled today to hold an inquest over the remains of the dead man, who was found Friday in an outhouse back of the old Chicago saloon in the tenderloin district. The jury was empaneled this morning and was composed of J. F. Schmitt, J. S. Brisbin and G. H. Evans. After an hour's session the inquest was continued until this afternoon when a verdict was reached. After the remains had been viewed, W. K. Howse, the negro who discovered the body, was sworn and gave his testimony which was unimportant and has been given before in the Leader. George H. Gilland, a ranchman of Egbert, testified that the deceased was Walter Groff, of Wood River, Neb. and had worked for him two years ago for three months. A cousin of the deceased, who is here, also identified the remains as those of Groff. The scarlet woman who saw Groff last testified that Groff had stated, on showing a dollar, that it was his last but that he had sent to Rawlins for more money. Groff had spent considerable money in Mrs. Curley's resort. Dr. Barber testified that Groff had undoubtedly committed suicide from the indications he found. The wound in the neck could not have been made by another man attacking Groff, as the cuts were close together and parallel. The cut in the neck and the poison did not cause death but the man died from strangulation. It would be difficult for a man to kill himself in this manner but an indentation in the chin showed where the knife had caught and prevented the handkerchief from unwinding. The handkerchief was still twisted when the remains were viewed by the jury. The verdict of the jury was unanimous that Groff had tried to kill himself by poison and cutting his own throat, but failing in these, had then strangled himself to death. The funeral of Groff occurred this afternoon at 4 o'clock from the morgue and the remains being interred in the city cemetery. The 1900 Federal Census for the Egbert Pct., Laramie Co., Wyoming lists Walter Groff, age 20, born Dec. 1879 in Nebraska, single, occupation - Day laborer, as residing in the household of George Gilland.
