VICTORIA - Bernice Johnson Tipton, 90, of Victoria, passed away peacefully at her home, Thursday, January 10th, 2019, after a courageous and steadfast battle with lung cancer. Bernice's family and friends will gather for visitation, Tuesday, January 15th, 2019 from 5:00PM to 7:00PM, at Grace Funeral Home, 2401 Houston Hwy. in Victoria, with a rosary to be recited at 7:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held, Wednesday, January 16th at 2:00PM at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 402 S. Main St. in Victoria, rosary will be recited at 1:30PM. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Victoria. Bernice was born September 4, 1928 in George West, Texas to the late Clarence John and Mary Jessie Umphries Johnson. Bernice was a true entrepreneur in life and had many talents. She was known to always own a bar or lounge over the years. Bernice also was a Beautician, enjoyed helping the ladies become beautiful with her handiwork. She enjoyed entertaining folks that gathered at her places and serving them a good cold beer. Bernice lived in the Alice, Texas area for many years, where she owned the "Oil Patch" and "The Dereck" back in the 1950's. It was in the 1970's she moved to the Victoria area. She operated the "Aloe Lounge" until 2017, she offered countless people a spot to gather and laugh together. Bernice had a passion for horses and lucked her way into a beautiful quarter horse named "Bar Room Talk" that won numerous times at the tracks in Goliad. Bernice had a feisty spirit and was always wanting to give to others. You never left her home without a gift from her. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Mary Johnson; her first husband, Rusty Willenborg, who died in 1984; her siblings, Sonny, Buck, Dell, Katey, Ina, Charley, Floyd and Dorothy.
