Retired police captain and municipal judge Jack Summerville, 89, of Marion died July 10 at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro. Services were Monday at Valley United Methodist Church. Interment was in Marion Cemetery. Born July 2, 1925, in Marion to William and Etta Mae (Suffield) Summervill, an error on his birth certificate meant he would forever carry a different last name than that of his parents. A veteran of the Marine Corps, he was wounded during World War II. On Jan. 25, 1945, married Peggy Gerstenkorn. A long time employee of the Wichita Police Department, he moved up the ranks from patrol officer to captain, taught at the Wichita police academy, was a watch commander at its detention center, and was a court liaison officer. After retiring from the force in 1975, the family moved to Marion, where he was municipal judge and drove a school bus. He was a member of the Hillsboro American Legion, former president of the Kansas Peace Officers Association, and member of Valley United Methodist Church. He is preceded by a brother, Richard Stack, and survived by his wife, son John, daughter Jeanne Maki; a sister, Dawna Denney, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Memorial funds have been established with Valley United Methodist Church and Hillsboro American Legion Post 366. Published in the Marion County Record on July 16, 2014 Marion, KS.
