James Arthur Keeling passed away on June 24, 2014. He was born in Dallas on June 26, 1926 to Arthur and Lillian Keeling. He grew up in Oak Cliff, where he attended the Dallas schools, and later graduated from Highland Park High School. He was active in Boy Scouts, and attained the rank of Eagle. He served in the Army Air Corps in Luzon, The Philippines, during World War II. He graduated from S.M.U., where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. With his brother, George, he formed Keeling Brothers Construction Company. They built homes, churches, recreation centers, and fire stations, as well as the entrance to The Dallas Zoo. He married Katherine Maddox on December 6, 1952, and they had three daughters, Ginny, Elizabeth, and Melanie. He was a great reader and a natural teacher, a barbecue master, and a friend to all dogs. In his later years, he enjoyed his grandchildren and his great grandson, his friends in The ROMEO's, and delivering Meals on Wheels. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, George W. Keeling. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Katherine Keeling, his daughters, his grandchildren, Katie Hairgrove and her husband, Charles, Hayley Lowe, Cullen Thomas, Lucia Ponziano, Agata Ponziano, his great grandson, Charlie Hairgrove, his sister in law, Bonnie Keeling, and many nieces and nephews. Thank you to Reverend Artis Jones, Fabiola Figueroa, and the staff of The Villages of Lake Highlands for their loving care. A memorial service will be held in the St. Michael Chapel, St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, on Saturday, July 12, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at The DFW National Cemetery at a later date.
