Son of Herbert Harley & Carmen Comme-Blanche (Kellenbarger) Gardner. He attended the Omaha Bible Institute in Omaha, for three years, graduating with the Class of 1950 when the school became Omaha Baptist Bible College. He spent four summer months in 1949 working with the Scripture Memory Mountain Mission in Harlan County, Ky., doing home-missionary work among the poor families of this coalmine area. Upon returning to Broken Bow, he worked at several jobs and then became the Night Clerk at the Registration Desk at the Arrow Hotel. He worked at the Hotel for 27 years when he retired on Sept. 30, 1984, when the owner closed the door. Prior to working at the Arrow Hotel he worked with his father who operated the city cab company in Broken Bow for over 18 years. On Feb. 9, 1983, while on duty at the Arrow Hotel, he was held up at gunpoint by a young man who struck him over the head, which caused his health to deteriorate more. On Sept. 11, 1990 he underwent major heart surgery.
