Dallas Morning News 29 Sept 1931 Farmer of 70 and His Son Meet Instant Death When Train Strikes Their Truck at Crossing ________________ Accident Happens Near Place Where Thirteen Others Were Killed Two Years Ago. ________________ Funerals Tuesday ________________ Double Ceremony Will Be Held for Victims at Mesquite Church. ________________ Henry E. Guynes, 70, and his son, Oliver Guynes, 43, were instantly killed at 2 P.M. Monday when an eastbound Texas and Pacific train struck the truck in which they were riding at a crossing four miles east of Mesquite, Dallas County. The father and son, who lived on a farm near where the accident occurred, were hauling a load of second-hand lumber from Mesquite to the farm for improvements. The crossing is a mile west of the point where thirteen persons were killed in a similar accident Aug. 17, 1929. Eight members of the Padgitt family and five members of the McHenry family lost their lives in the former tragedy. A double funeral services will be held at the Mesquite Baptist Church Tuesday at 3:30 P.M. The body of Henry Guynes was thrown about twenty feet down the track. Oliver Guynes' body was extracted from the demolished truck. Lumber was scattered for many feet along the right of way and the truck bed was swept clear of its load. Oliver Guynes was driving the truck along the road which parallels the railroad on the north side. The highway makes a sharp turn to the right up a steep grade. The truck and train were going in the same direction when the turn was made, There were no obstruction to the view at the point. Henry Guynes is survived by his wife: sons, Lloyd Guynes of Mesquite and Alta Guynes, a member of the Shreveport fire department, and two daughters, Mrs. Minnie Williams of Mesquite and Mrs. Elza Whitley of Grand Prairie.
