BROKEN BOW — Merlin Benjamin Seidel, 25, of Sargent died Sunday, June 15, 2014, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Ravenna High School football field. In case of inclement weather the service will be at the Ravenna City Auditorium. Burial will be at Somerford Cemetery in Sargent. Rasmussen Funeral Home in Ravenna is in charge of the arrangements. He was born March 22, 1989, in Ord to Dennis A. and Nancy A. (Barnhart) Seidel of rural Sargent. Survivors include his mother, Nancy, and his closest friend and stepfather, John Horky; his maternal grandparents; and aunts, uncles and many cousins. He and his brother, Phillip, lived the farming and ranching life. They were animal lovers. They raised cattle, hogs and horses. Merlin and Phillip were diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy at an early age. They were never slowed down by the disease. Their muscles were weakened and they were confined to wheelchairs at around age 9. That never handicapped Merlin or Phillip. They showed horses, cattle, sheep and chickens in 4-H. They earned many trophies and ribbons. They spent many hours working with livestock with their parents and many hours out doing fieldwork. Merlin attended school in Sargent and graduated from Sargent High School in 2007. He was a member of the National Honor Society. He was a student manager for the Sargent boys basketball team for six years, never missing a practice and wishing he was playing the game. He was a member of the Sargent FFA. He attended the state convention and earned his state degree. He was crowned prom king. He was a member of the Nebraska High School Rodeo Association. Merlin was a member of the Sargent Cousins 4-H Club for 10 years. He showed cattle, sheep and hogs at the state fair. Merlin exhibited his 900-pound boar, Arnold, and 650 Big Barrow in 2013. They were invited back this year, and they will be there as a tribute to Merlin. Merlin loved music. He played the drums in high school. He attended all of the Comstock Music Festivals. Merlin and Phillip loved to travel. He traveled to all of the states except seven. He had a trip planned to Alaska this summer. His passport came on the day he passed away. Merlin followed his family square dancing and camping with them. Merlin liked NASCAR and attended a race in Bristol, Tenn. He loved sports, football, basketball and baseball. His teams were the Colts, Packers, Cubs, Red Sox and the Heat. Merlin would have liked to be a sportscaster, as he was an encyclopedia when in came to sports. His favorite team was the Ravenna Bluejays. Merlin met them at the state basketball tournament in 2003. DeVon Huebert introduced Merlin and his brother, Phillip, to Paul Beranek and the team. Merlin had followed the team at state for many years and has followed their team throughout their seasons since 2007. Merlin learned about the Lord at an early age. He attended church and religious classes through high school. Merlin and his brother just seemed to have a natural faith in God. There had been a lot of trials in Merlin's life and he and his brother would talk about it a lot. They overcame all of them, never giving up. Merlin became friends with John Horky, who also shared the Bible with him and eventually became his stepdad. Merlin attended church regularly and loved doing Bible studies and being part of his church family. Most importantly to Merlin was telling others how important it is to become saved and act like you are saved. He was preceded in death by his father; brother, Phillip; and his paternal grandparents.
