He moved from Higbee, Missouri, to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1927. He was a coal miner in Higbeeat at the same mine his father worked. He served in the Army (WW I) 1919 to 1922. He was a blacksmith. He retired from Wilson Food after 30 years in 1964. He was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church, Mount Hermon Masonic Lodge 263 AF & AM, El Kahir Shrine, Cedar Rapids Consistory, Retired Peoples Club, United Food and Commercial Workers AFL-CIO and was active in the Boy Scouts for many years. He had 60 percent of his stomach removed in 1966 due to ulcers. He raised coon dogs for hunting. He called all girls "Susie" and all boys "Johnny". From Cedar Rapids Gazette, Jan. 27, 1984 JAMES R. ORTON, 85, of 625 21st Ave. SW died Friday at St. Luke's Hospital following a brief illness. Born Aug. 12, 1898, at Higbee, Mo., he married Viola Nevins on Jan. 1, 1924, at Christian Church Parsonage, Moberly, Mo. A Cedar Rapids resident since 1927, he was employed by Wilson Foods for 30 years prior to retirement in 1964 and was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church, Mount Hermom Masonic Lodge 263 AF & AM, El Kahir Shrine, Cedar Rapids Consistory, Retired Peoples Club, United Food and Commercial Workers AFL-CIO and was active in the Boy Scouts for many years.He also served in the Army during World War I. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, William R. of Cedar Rapids and James A. of Salina, Kan.; two daughters, Elizabeth Kasner and Patricia Carder, both of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Louise Baker and Emma Duffield, both of Moberly, Mo.; a brother, Earnest of Hannibal, Mo.; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Services: 3 p.m. Monday at Turner Chapel West by the Rev. Jack R. Hooten of Sharon United Methodist Church. Burial: Linwood Cemetery.Masonic services by Mount Hermon Masonic Lodge 263. A memorial fund has been established at Sharon United Methodist Church, 831 18th Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids, 52404 James was called Roy by everyone in Missouri. Military: Enlisted WWI on Aug. 11, 1919, and was discharged July 26, 1922. Burial: 30 Jan 1984, IA, Cedar Rapids, Linwood Cemetery. Occupation: Coal Miner/Blacksmith.
