Bio

Leonard Alden Steffen was born April 22, 1921 in the home of his maternal grandparents. He was the first of eight children born to Fred and Josephine (Schroeder) Steffen. He attended country school south of Colome through the 8th grade. Then Leonard went to work on the family farm until he was called into the service. In June 1942, he was drafted into the Army and was stationed various places, including Germany, during his service to our country. Leonard was honorably discharged as a Tec 4 (Sargent) in December 1945. He returned home to work on the family farm and then married the neighbor girl, Joyce Marie (Holden) Steffen on August 4, 1947. To this union 2 children were born, Jolene Hagen and Lennie Steffen. The couple lived most of their married life in the Colome community. In 2007, they moved to an apartment in Winner. Leonard worked most of his years as a farm hand for various area farmers. For 13 years, he worked for Tripp Co. as a motor grader operator. He loved being outside, and after retirement, enjoyed tinkering around the yard. When Leonard was young, he enjoyed training teams and saddle horses. His son and grandson inherited his love of horses. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and also of the St. Isidore Catholic Church. Leonard's joy was having visitors. His delight was having his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren visit anytime. He was always ready for a good game of cards with anyone willing to play. Leonard enjoyed going to Lower Brule for a good steak meal. Leonard Alden Steffen, Sr., 93, passed away at the Winner Regional Longterm Care on May 28, 2014.
