Melvina (Vina) Baker was born February 18, 1859 in Indiana. She was raised as an orphan-by whom is not known. On August 18, 1879, she married Jacob L. Gearner in Dubois, Indiana. They had two sons and two daughters before Jake's early death at the age of 30 in 1887. Around 1890, Melvina moved her four young children to Texas- Loue, Walter Samuel, Willard William, and Daisy Mae. They stayed with relatives and friends in Hopkins County. Around that time , Vina married a man named Turner and with him had a son named Benjamin "Bennie" Turner in 1895. When Benny was a very young boy, his father Turner died. Turners first name and birth and death dates are unknown. Melvina married William M. Browning sometime after his first wife died in 1903. In 1919, her son, Bennie, was fatally injured in WWI and is buried in France. Her grandchildren knew her as Grandma Browning. On March 27, 1940, Melvina died at the age of 81 and was buried in Shady Grove Cemetery, Wood County.
