Bio

David Lee Sadler, born the son of a farmer on June 27, 1948 took a remarkable work ethic and degree of focus to Texas A&M University in 1966, after finishing as salutatorian at Alba Golden High School. At Texas A&M, he was a walkon to the Freshman basketball team, a freshman member of the Corps of cadets, with a pre medicine focus, academically. He would eventually concentrate all of his focus, preparing for Medical school. In 1970, he enrolled at UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas. After graduating, he began his general surgery residency in San Angelo, Texas in 1978. With a calling to specialize in Cardio Vascular & Thoracic Surgery, he moved back to Dallas in 1984 to begin his training. He took this specialized practice of medicine to Longview, Texas in 1987 to begin the city's first heart program with Jay Chastain at Good Shepard Medical Center. This team of David, Jay, Frank, Barbara, Sharon and all Good Shepherd Staff cared for many East Texans for the next 27 years of David's life. While never ceasing to practice medicine, he would in his later years reconnect with his farm roots by restoring the grounds of his 25 acre homestead on the corner of HG Mosley and McCann Road will always be an enduring reminder of his vision, focus and commitment to his life's work and all he served. David Lee Sadler is survived by his brother, Philip Michael Sadler and family, his two children: Jones Elliott Sadler and Anna-Kathryn Marguerite Prince his granddaughter, Palmer Madison Prince and a host of dear friends. He was greatly loved by his friends and family and will always be remembered for his impact in the East Texas community. Sadler, 65, partnered with fellow cardiovascular surgeon Jay Chastain to perform thousands of heart surgeries during the past 26 years. Chastain said Tuesday that his business partner and friend will be greatly missed. "Dr. Sadler often referred to me as his brother," he said. "He was extremely loyal. Once he became your friend and made a commitment to you, he was there. He was that way with his patients. "The kind of guy you wanted to go to if you had a very serious situation. He just would not quit. He made me a better doctor and better man in general." Chastain said when he and Sadler first met in Longview in 1987, they sat down and discussed the plan for the innovative heart program. "We got to know one another and felt like in that meeting that we could work together," he said. When Sadler needed open heart surgery 20 years ago, Chastain said he performed the operation. "He got through major surgery and went on to perform thousands of surgeries," Chastain said. "He was just a hard-nosed guy when getting the job done. If he told you he was going to do something, he was going to do it. When not caring for his patients, Sadler devoted time to the restoration of the historic Bramlette House in Longview, which he owned. ~
