On November 23, 1908, Ray was born in a sod house in the sand hills of Garfield County, Nebraska, son of Charles and Grace (Keeler) Demaree. When he grew up Ray moved to York, Nebraska so that he could attend high school. Following his schooling Ray supported the family as he worked for a veterinarian for ten years. Ray moved to California working in a glove factory and boot factory. He later worked as a chauffeur and bus driver, in Nebraska and West Virginia, and drove bus for a country western show. Ray met his future wife, Betty Woltjer while fishing at Ten Mile Lake. They were married December 2, 1937 in Dalton, Minnesota. The couple farmed for 25 years in Grant County. Ray was the Wilken County Assessor from 1965-1976. Ray and Betty retired in Alexandria. Ray enjoyed fishing, reading and traveling in the United States. His two grandsons and his great grandson were very important people in his life. Ray held the top honor for hours of volunteer service time at the Knute Nelson Memorial Home since 1978. Whether helping with bingo, assisting as a med driver for residents with doctor appointments, his hours served as a volunteer amounted to 4,969 hours! He also volunteered his time as a bus driver for First Lutheran Church where he was a member. Ray died on March 25, 2001 at the Knute Nelson Memorial Home at the age of 92. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Leo, Dewey, Glen and Harold Demaree; and sisters, Lorina Peterson, Mae Moulton (twin sister) and Hazel Finke. Ray is survived by his wife, Betty of Alexandria; two sons, James (Marge) Demaree of Montevideo; and Larry (Susan) Demaree of Scottsdale, AZ; two grandsons, Charles (Jody) and Jon (Gay) Demaree; and one great grandson, Nathan Demaree. A funeral service was held March 28, 2001 at the First Lutheran Church with Reverend John Peshek officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery. Pallbearers were Irvin Sabbe, Marvin Bakken, Ronald Woltjer and Steven Woltjer. Honorary pallbearers were Charles Demaree, Jon Demaree and Nathan Demaree. Arrangements by Anderson Funeral Home.
