Sandena 'Sandy' Piazza Hykel WOODBRIDGE, VIRGINIA — Sandena 'Sandy' Piazza Hykel, 91, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2005, in Woodbridge, Virginia. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m., Saturday, April 2, 2005, at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father John Paul Flajole, OFM, as Celebrant. Entombment will follow the service at Calvary Mausoluem. The family will receive visitors after 5 p.m., Friday, April 1, 2005, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home. A rosary will be held at 6 p.m., led by Father John Paul Flajole, OFM. Sandy was born December 31, 1913, in Waco, Texas, to Sam and Marietta Nicosia Piazza, as one of the couple's eleven children. She attended high school and a year of business college in Waco before moving to Galveston in 1932. Sandy worked at American National Insurance Company and married her husband, Joseph, in May 1940. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and was an active volunteer with the Girl Scouts of America. Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Marietta Nicosia Piazza; her husband, Joseph R. Hykel; son-in-law, Rodney J. Smith; brothers, Ralph, Tommy, and Rico Piazza; and sisters, Clara Badami, Tina Piazza, Rosalie DeVries, Lucile Monford, Marie Smith, and Palmetta Valentine. She is survived by her daughters, Sandra Newding, of Texas City; Marietta Smith, of Woodbridge, Virginia; grandchildren, Wendy Newding Kortz, Andrea Newding Wheeler, Chad Newding and wife, Lisa, and Sabrina Smith; great granddaughters, Tiffany and Samantha Jo Kortz; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends. Pallbearers will be Ronnie Monford, Randy Smith, Eddie Janek, Chad Newding, Gary Hykel, and Nick Kralj. Memorials may be made to the St. Patrick Catholic Church Building Fund.
