Mildred K. Smock, age 94, of Council Bluffs, passed away May 8, 2014, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital. Mildred was born March 19, 1920, in Floris, Iowa, to the late A. Thomas and Lula M. (Dunlavy) Smock. She graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1938; earned her B.A. degree from University of Omaha (UNO) and her M.A. degree in Library Science from the University of Denver. Mildred worked at the Council Bluffs Public Library from 1941-1992 and was the Library Director from 1957-1992. She was a member of First Central Congregational Church in Omaha; the American Library Association (served on Council and numerous Committees); Public Library Association (served on Board of Directors and Committees); Iowa Library Association (President, 1961-1962, on Boards and Committees); Chapter GQ PEO Sisterhood; AAUW, Bluffs Arts Council, Booklovers, Chanticleer Board of Directors, Delta Kappa Gamma, Friends of the Council Bluffs Public Library, and Mercy Hospital Lay Advisory Board. Mildred received many honors: Mercy Hospital Heritage Award for Education in 1986; Harry C. Voss Volunteer of the Year Award; was named to the Abraham Lincoln High School Hall of Fame in 1999; Chamber of Commerce President's Award in 1990 and was the 1st Renaissance Faire Queen. In addition to her parents, Mildred was preceded in death by her sisters, Ruth Smock Plummer, Edith Smock Smith; brother, Charles W. Smock; niece, Margaret Miller and nephews, Richard Plummer and Richard Hall. Mildred is survived by nephew, Dale Miller; nieces, Barbara Hall and Mary Plummer; great nieces and nephews; 1 great grand niece and 4 great grand nephews.
