Daniel Justin "Cooney" Zimmerhanzel of Smithville passed away April 21, 2014 at the age of 88. He was born on September 25, 1925 to Lawrence and Janie Zimmerhanzel. Daniel was one of seven children. After attending Smithville High School, Daniel served in World War II as part of the United States Coast Guard. After the war, he attended North Texas State University and went on to work as a butcher and a school bus driver before joining the Katy Railroad where he worked for over 20 years. He also enjoyed spending time ranching, gardening, and fishing. Daniel's motto in life was "always be prepared," something he learned serving in the United State Coast Guard. His core values were centered on honesty and integrity. He stayed informed by reading the newspaper almost every day and one of his greatest attributes was the ability to "gab" – yes, he could talk your ear off given the chance! Daniel is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 53 years, Betty Jane Zimmerhanzel, and his son Lawrence Daniel Zimmerhanzel. Survivors include his wife of 8 years, Rheda "Rivka" Zimmerhanzel; daughters Loretta Ann Zimmerhanzel Dreyer and Lillian Jane Zimmerhanzel Taylor; son August Justin Zimmerhanzel, his wife Deena Marie; step-sons Ben Joshua Kusmin and Sean David Kusmin, his wife Susan; grandchildren Michelle, Tara, Morgan, Taner and Bailey; step-grandchildren Katie and Emre; and numerous nieces and nephews.
