Fred Arnold Munke, 86, of Anahuac, Texas, passed away on Monday, April 7, 2014 at St. Mark's Medical Center in La Grange, Texas. Fred was born in Fayette County, Texas on July 15, 1927, the son of Herman and Elizabeth (Fietsam) Munke. He married Gladys Herbrich on November 20, 1949 at Zion Lutheran Church in La Grange, Texas. Fred served in the U.S. Army from 1945-1946 and was stationed in Japan. He was a commercial fisherman and retired after 58 years. Fred was a talented boat builder and built his own boats for his commercial fishing business. He never ran from any of the hurricanes and had the hope to live through more. Fred loved children, even though he never had any of his own. He loved to listen to classical music. He was very proud of his German heritage. He is survived by five nieces: Theresa Banse and husband, Norbert; Peggy Hartensteiner and husband, James; Mary Herbrich; Susie Polasek and husband, David; Pam Vinklarek and husband, Russell;four nephews: Mike Sellstrom and wife, Theresa; Robert Herbrich and, wife, Wanda; Clinton Herbrich, Jr.; Richard Herbrich; numerous great and great great nieces and nephews; and close special friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gladys, of 43 years; three sisters: Josephine Munke Rosenberg and husband, George; Ruth Munke Sellstrom and husband, Dave; Judith Munke Vacek and husband, L.F.; and sister-in-law, Rosemary Woody Herbrich. Burial will follow services at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Cemetery.
