James D.Shimek June 14,1937–April 1,2014 James “Jim” D. Shimek, 76 of Gering passed away April 1, 2014 at Regional West Medical Center. His funeral service was April 5 at First United Methodist Church in Gering. Interment followed at Sunset Memorial Park with military honors provided by the Nebraska Army National Guard. Jim was born June 14, 1937 to James A. and Mary (Pesek) Shimek on the family farm near Marsland in Box Butte County. He attended rural grade school and graduated from Hemingford High School in 1955. He married Eleanor Rohla on Aug. 3, 1963 in Winner, S.D. and for over 50 years they made their home in Gering. Jim belonged to the Gering Methodist Church and he served in the US Army for four years, including a year in Germany. He was also a proud member of the Gering Fire Department for 49 years. After working construction for a brief time, he was employed by WNX and then he worked at Bee Line Motor Freight until he retired in 1997. Jim loved camping and, with his family by his side, he was able to camp from “coast to coast and border to border.” After retirement, he and Eleanor enjoyed being campground hosts at many Nebraska State Parks. Jim spent many days volunteering at the North Platte Valley Museum, the Farm And Ranch Museum, and now the Legacy of the Plains Museum. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother: Leonard; and an infant brother and sister.
