Elizabeth "Betty" (Spilinek) Johnson, daughter of Joesph F. "Joe" and Augusta Marie (Ingerle) Spilinek, was born August 7, 1930, at Elba, Nebraska. Betty died Monday, March 17, 2014, at The Sumner Place, Lincoln, Nebraska. Betty attended rural school District #18 in Howard County, Nebraska, for eight years, then attended and graduated from Scotia (NE.) High School with the Class of 1948. Upon completing high school, she went to work as a secretary for the State Office on Aging until 1949. On September 25, 1949, Betty was married to Donald Ivan Johnson in Lincoln. Betty and Donald would go on to celebrate 61 years of marriage on September 25, 2010. Don was an aviation mechanic by trade, and in 1951, the couple moved to Wayne, Nebraska, where they became managers of the Wayne Airport for 25 years. Betty assisted with the management of the airport and also learned to fly small planes, receiving her pilot's license in 1953. While living in Wayne, Nebraska Betty attended Wayne (NE.) State College, graduating in 1975 with a degree in Library Science and Education. After completing college, she and Donald moved to Sergeant Bluff, Iowa five years. It was during their time in Sergeant Bluff that Betty began her library career at the Sioux City (IA.) Public Library. In 1980, Betty and Donald moved to Sidney, Nebraska, where her library career spanned 12 years in western Nebraska school libraries. In 1994, the couple retired to Norfolk, Nebraska. Betty was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Northeast Nebraska Art Association, and the Naomi Circle at First Christian Church, Norfolk, Nebraska. She loved her family very much and enjoyed family gatherings, especially birthday parties, and playing with her grandchildren, this gave Betty her greatest joy. Her rose garden was very special as well, as she gave away countless cut roses to family, friends, neighbors, and area nursing homes. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Ivan Johnson on June 28, 2011; grandparents; parents; brother, Franklin Spilinek; sisters, Shirley Bonsall and Patty Davis. Funeral services for Elizabeth "Betty" Johnson, was at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 24, 2014, at First Christian Church, Norfolk, Nebraska. Reverend Randall Coffin was officiator, Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Norfolk, Nebraska.
