Emma Sobon, the fifth child and first girl in a family of seven children, was born on April 17, 1914 to Joseph and Catherine (Janus) Kapustka. She was born in a farm house outside of Ord, Nebraska. She attended a country school near Elyria, Nebraska through the 8th grade. Emma married John C. Sobon at Elyria on May 4, 1937. They lived in Valley County Nebraska before moving with their 18 month old son to Kimball in September of 1940. Having a natural talent for sewing ever since she was a younge girl, Emma began a career as a seamstress when her son Lambert and daughter Sharon were both in school. She started out doing alterations for clothing stores located in Kimball. Her reputation grew and she transitioned to performing alterations and making new clothes (brides maid dresses, cheerleader uniforms, ect) and curtains/drapes. Emma was also active in the Altar Society at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. She made new alter cloths on several occasions and for three years washed and ironed them. Baking pies for the annual Fall Dinner was special to her. Her baking skills were always appericiated by family. There were always plenty of her wonderful cinnamon rolls and kolaches when they came to visit. Emma retired from her seamstress work shortly after John retired in 1973. She continued to live in their Jefferson Street house after the death of John on June 14, 1994. As long as she was able, she traveled to Arizona and California to visit her children and grandchildren. She became a resident at the Kimball County Manor in August of 2004 and came to love all of the activities that were available as well as the warm, caring staff that watched after her. Survivors include her sister Pearl Gibney of Omaha, NE; daughter Sharon A. Sobon of Phoenix, AZ; son Lambert J. (Sharon) Sobon of Angels Camp, CA; grandchildren Paula Alaimo of Ft. Collins, Co., Mary Blundon of Citrus Heights, CA., John D. Sobon of Centennial, CO., Sharon K. Correa of Rocklin, CA., and Patricia M. Place of Roseville, CA; nine great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
