Bio

Wiley Newton Gower was born in 1832 to Nicholas Gower and Matilda Woodward. His mother died in 1844 when he was young. In 1863 Wiley married a young widow, Eliza Jane Bryant Clayton, whose husband had died in the Civil War and who had an infant son. The couple had two children together -- Martin Luther Gower and Mary Alice Gower. Tragedy struck, likely an epidemic, and both Wiley and his young wife died in 1872. Although no burial records have been found, it is almost certain that they were buried in the Gower family cemetery on Nicholas Gower's farm, where many Gowers and Bryants were buried with only field stones to mark their graves.
