Bio
John W. EVANS, born in North Carolina, Aug. 14, 1827, died at Worthington, December 23, 1905. While a small boy his father and mother moved to Indian Creek Township, Monroe County, Ind. A short time after they came here his father was killed by a falling tree, and he and other brothers were forced to labor for their own support. He was married to Martha C. KING, Aug. 9, 1849. To this union was born eight children, his wife and five children having gone before him in death. The three children that survive him are Joseph EVANS, Riley EVANS and Mary BURCH. His son Mart EVANS, died only a week ago at Worthington. He was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church at Union and had been a faithful member in good standing for thirty years. He was one of the pioneer farmers of Greene County and lived a life of perpetual toil and usefulness, wielding a great influence for good in this community. His name was a proverb of industry to all who knew him. For the past nine years he had been making his home with John W. MOOD, to whom he had sold his farm a few years ago. The great love that he had for his old home forbade him to leave it. And day after day has he gone over the old farm and done work which he saw needed to be done. He took sick last Monday night of bronchial-pneumonia and grew worse very fast until his death. The funeral was preached at the home of John W. MOOD, Sunday at 11 o'clock a. m. by Elder J. W. MITCHELL after which the remains were laid to rest in the Williams Cemetery. A host of friends and relatives came to pay their last tribute to Uncle John.
