Joseph immigrated to the U.S. with his parents and brothers, arriving in New York on 29 Oct 1895 aboard the ship "Trave". Their destination was Omaha, NE. (Although Joseph said he was born in Nebraska in every census record) The family lived in South Omaha where the father worked in a meat packing house, eventually the sons did too. Later, the father was a clerk in a dry goods store. Joseph started working in the meat packing house as young as age 16 where he continued to work throughout his adult years. Joseph married Millie Hambek in July 1917 in Douglas county, NE. They had children, Joseph F., Mildred Cich, Arlene Andreasen and Lois Marie Gradoville.
