Laban was the son of Hartwell House and Nancy Harrison. He was first married to Elizabeth Barnes 11 Dec 1841 in Brunswick County, VA and following her death he married Nancy Ann Caroline Black 7 Oct 1873 in Bastrop County, Texas.
