Viola Mazac Kurtz, born Dec. 12, 1912, in Floresville, Texas, passed away Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013. She held a civil service job at Red River Ordinance Depot from 1944-45 and moved back to San Antonio in 1945. She was employed by the San Antonio Independent School District and retired as a cafeteria manager after 32 years. Viola also worked for SPJST Lodge No. 133 for 22 years as a financial treasurer and reporter. Her hobbies were raising vegetables and flowers, and canning. When she retired, she enjoyed dancing, singing, and playing dominoes. Viola was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, the Altar Society, KJT, KJZT, the San Antonio Czech Choral Club, TRS, and SPJST. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Frank Mazac and Charlie Kurtz; her parents, Adolph and Pauline Miculka; brothers George and Vladik "Stubby"; and her sisters, Agnes Reinhard and Helen Bravenec. Survivors include her loving son, Adolph Mazac and Bootsie; a grandson, Edward Mazac and Ronda; granddaughter Carmen Mazac; a great-granddaughter, Kayla Cook and Andy; her great-great-grandson Tobias; stepdaughter Charlene; five stepgrandsons, Kyle, Scott, Todd, Craig, and Kley Semlinger; eight great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter; numerous nieces, nephews; and other loving family members and friends. Visitation began Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 5 p.m., with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. in the Mission Park Funeral Chapel South. Mass was celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Margaret Mary's Catholic Church.
